2010 Best of 757 Baseball Preview - VirginiaPreps.com

"We've already seen over 300 athletes participate in the Best of the 757 Football and Basketball Showcases," Cunningham said. "Now, its baseball's turn, and we look forward to shining the spotlight on some of the top baseball talent in our area."?

All baseball prospects are welcomed to attend and it is not limited to the Hampton Roads area code. Players from as far away as North Carolina have already signed up. The early list of prospects includes a wide range of experience from JV players to players who have committed to D1 programs.

Already signed up is one of the states top prospects in Cape Henry left-hander Jack Wynkoop who has already committed to the NCAA champion South Carolina Gamecocks even though he only a junior. A 1st-team All-State player as a sophomore, the 6-foot-5 WynKoop hit a 3-run homerun in the state championship game win over Covenant.

Western Branch came within one game of playing for the state championship and their commitment to being the best is proven by having the most sign-ups of any single team thus far with six players including Shane Johnsonbaugh and third baseman Brandon Doggett.? Indian River has four players signed up including outfielder Leland Clemmons who is a favorite to do well in the speed events. The senior has already committed to UNC-Charlotte to play baseball.?

After registration, the athletes will be tested for their Nike SPARQ rating with baseball specific speed, power, and agility tests. Following the SPARQ testing, the athletes will compete in the baseball skills challenge. BJ Upton (Tampa Devil Rays), Justin Upton (Arizona Diamondbacks), and Michael Cuddyer (Minnesota Twins) are scheduled to attend based upon availability.

Tim Hummel, himself a former pro baseball player, believes this is a great event for athletes to reach their goals. "7 Cities Sports; Michael, BJ, Justin, and myself, is excited to team up with the Best of the 757, VirginiaPreps.com, and the Boo Williams Sportsplex for the 2010 Best of the 757 Showcase Series. This is a wonderful opportunity for high school athletes to get coveted exposure for their skills. 7 Cities Sports strives to give young athletes the best opportunities to reach the next level. In this case, the opportunity to get in front of coaches and scouts will assist them in achieving their goals of participating in collegiate or professional sports."
